How Does an Electric Bus Work?
Traditional vehicles use internal combustion engines that operate on fossil fuels like diesel and gas. Electric Vehicles (EVs), on the other hand, are powered by chargeable lithium-ion batteries similar to those used to power laptops and other electrical devices.
Since EVs don’t run on fuel, they emit less air pollution and greenhouse gasses, making them the best option for sustainable transportation.
Benefits of an Electric Bus
Transportation has one of the greatest impacts on our planet, accounting for 45% of greenhouse gas emissions in Washington State alone. Given the need for greener alternatives to preserve the environment, MTRWestern wants to lead the charge by exploring innovative technology that can help us achieve greener travel and set an example for other businesses nationwide.
Affordability
In addition to being eco-friendly, electric vehicles are also more affordable to maintain and operate since they don’t require oil changes or fuel.
Smoother and Quieter Travel
Since EVs operate off of electricity rather than fuel, they are substantially quieter and run smoother than traditional vehicles. When riding on an electric bus, you can enjoy a peaceful journey to your destination.
An Ever-Evolving Technology
One of the greatest benefits of an electric bus, and other EVs in general, is that they are always improving in efficiency and tech. While the current EVs on the market are already impressive, they are always being evolved and improved upon, far exceeding what gas-powered vehicles can achieve.
What Electric Bus Is MTRWestern Testing?
MTRWestern is testing the Vanhool CX45E for use in our fleet. The CX45E can facilitate larger groups, with seating for up to 56 passengers and a measurement of 45-feet in size.
This electric bus possesses a range of 186 miles between charging sessions, making it a great travel option for many occasions. Designed by independent Belgian bus, industrial vehicle, and coach manufacturer, Van Hool, the Vanhool CX45E is 1 of only 2 electric busses currently operating in North America and is a 100% battery operated motorcoach.
Our Goal
As part of our Charter Bus Electrification Project, MTRWestern plans for up to 15% of our fleet to be electric by 2025. We purchased our final internal combustion motorcoach in 2021 and all future vehicle purchases will be of busses with electrical capabilities.
We’ve also partnered with 2 non-profit environmental organizations to develop the best strategy for going green and meeting our goals.
